AboutMe

Personal English and Confidence Coach — guiding learners from across the world with a holistic, growth-minded approach.

Portrait of Alice E. Thornton

Growing up in the UK, I was the first in my family to go to University and as my confidence grew, I completed my BA in Law and then Master of Law (LLM). In my early 20's, I moved to Germany, working firstly for the US Army Employment Law department and then in the Business Management and Law department of Mannheim University.

With three children in the German school system, I also gained a real insight into the German education system, working voluntarily as both an Intercultural School mentor and on the school parents board.

With the change to freelancing, I worked with various German global companies that are based in the Metropolitan Rhine Neckar region of Germany. Combining my legal background with Business English and Intercultural Management, and having a working knowledge of the German language, I established my success in helping professional German speakers have a invaluable insight into the aspects of the English language that can prove tricky, such as the different uses of particular tenses in both languages, real-life situation phrasal verbs and colloquialisms.

Moving back to the UK and My Teaching Philosophy

In 2012, we moved back to the UK where I updated and refreshed my skills and knowledge as a teacher of the English language and Literature (PGCE/QTS) whilst also working towards qualifications in a topic that always been fundamentally important to me, namely Positive Mental Health and Mindset Development.

These skills and knowledge have been put into practise in a myriad of ways:

In 2022, I contributed to a specialist support project at Cardiff University, working with high-achieving Law and Medicine students on the autism spectrum. Drawing on my expertise in wellbeing and mindset development, I provided effective resilience-building techniques, personalised time-management support and counselling.

Working 1-1 with International students to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, build resilience and set meaningful goals that support both their language-learning journey and personal growth.

Understanding the relationship between neuroscience and learning is an integral part of my holistic approach to the learning process, incorporating positive psychology and my personal commitment to a growth mindset philosophy.

I look forward to meeting you soon, either on-line or in person, to determine how I can help you achieve your next goals! Please do not hesitate to drop me a line if you have any queries.
